In the USA a further differentiation is made between commercial and club grade commercial gym equipment
What type of fitness facility do you intend running?
The definition of commercial gym is a gym where people pay for the use of the equipment. Of course there is a lot of scope in that definition. A small personal training studio for example may only need a treadmill that will operate for three of four hours per day. In that case a light commercial treadmill will suffice.
If you are running a bigger gym and expect the treadmill to be used more than four hours per day on an ongoing basis then you might want to look at a full commercial treadmill.
If you are running a gym on the scale of a Virgin Active then might even see the sense in buying a club grade treadmill which is design to work many hours per day.
What about the strength gym equipment and free weights?
The same rules apply that you would want to buy according to your needs
I don’t recommend second hand equipment as it can like a very old car and full of surprises. It is also worth remembering that in the USA a legal precedent has been set in terms of gym owners being responsible of injuries in their gyms
There are certain ranges of light commercial gym equipment that can double up in a full commercial environment. Powertec make some pieces which are perfect even for a Virgin Active type gym.
How much does commercial gym equipment cost?
This is the first question I am always asked and the answer does not help that much.

Other cardio machines such as
- exercise Bikes. Light Commercial starting at R9000
- Exercise Steppers. Starting at around R18 000
- Rowers. Starting at R12 000
- Elliptical trainers. Starting at about R13 000
There are a number of variables which add to the value of the equipment. Which company and the people with whom you do business is very important factor. There are numerous people in South Africa who bring over the odd container of exercise equipment and gym equipment never to do so again and never holding spares. I travel extensively around the country and I frequently get asked by gym owners to help them source spares for fitness brands that I have never seen before.
When you buy commercial gym equipment ask the following questions
- How long have you been in the fitness industry? Some so called gym companies are selling everything from coffee to inflatable boats. They are not industry specialists.
- How long has the manufacturer been making fitness equipment? Does the company specialise in fitness equipment or does it make everything from vacuum cleaners to jam jars. Some overseas factory do?
- Have you supplied any commercial gyms ?
What else to ask your gym equipment supplier
- Do the suppliers assist with gym design and floor layout?
- Do any of the team members have any actual experience in running commercial health clubs or a similar facility?
- What type of warranties are on offer
